Where to even begin. . .This was such a beautiful and timeless story. I have a weakness for stories that are told without dialogue, and Broken Rules really nailed it here. Utilizing a unique play-mechanic of manipulating 3D spaces and traversing them as if they were 2D, we help our namesake old man journey across continents to reach his destination. Drawn by a troubling letter, we gain access to cherished memories from the man’s life and marriage. It is a story of love, loss, regret, and redemption, with choices that are so ubiquitous and social problems so well-traveled that we can all see ourselves in his shoes.
Old Man’s Journey is not a visual novel, however the feelings that it evokes in us as players are akin to reading a memoir full of life. With simple puzzles that escalate in complexity as the story progresses, it’s hard not to feel continuously captivated by the beautiful graphics, charming inhabitants, and heart-wrenching story.
