Wow, these last few weeks have been packed full of great online festivals and events! Today we’re talking about Devcom and their indie expo. Indie Hoard attended the event and talked with multiple developer teams to bring you the best of the bunch!
Here are our favorites:
Terra Alia
You’ve never seen magic like this. Terra Alia is an RPG-lite that doubles as a language learner. Unlike standard language apps that slightly gamify the learning process, Terra Alia takes place in an immersive, magical world complete with battles, intrigue, and adventure.
Choose your language and be swept away to the corresponding country on a study abroad trip. It quickly becomes apparent that suspicious activities have been going on, and your mentor has disappeared, leaving only an ominous message.
Explore campus and the surrounding area, increasing your stats as you investigate more objects, increasing your word library, and creating flash-card style resources for yourself. The more you investigate, the better your magic will become. With the help of your trusty friend Falco, a robotic bird, overcome obstacles and translate your way to victory!
Terra Alia is currently in early access on Steam, and 30 Parallel is very interested in reviews of this early build.
Midnight Protocol
Enter the minimalist world of the internet as a hacker in Midnight Protocol. The simple layouts and dynamic event effects make for a strangely engaging and visually stunning experience as players steal resources, evade detection, and fight off malware.
Despite being a mission-centric game, Midnight Protocol has an intensely rich narrative for players to uncover. Still, in a move toward allowing multiple play-styles, LuGus Studios refrained from making the narrative at all mandatory. Min and max players are free to use their information network to optimize missions to the fullest extent, while story-focused players can instead use their limited resources in a quest for revenge.
With no wrong outcomes, Midnight Protocol offers replayability with multiple endings and challenge levels.
LuGus Studios is currently in talks with potential publishing partners and hopes to bring Midnight Protocol to would-be hackers everywhere in 2020. Wishlist the game on Steam to stay updated.
Calorie Defenders
Become a general in the waging war between veggies and candy in this action-platformer, tower defense hybrid from Seedful Games. Inspired by the constant accessibility of sweets and treats in his workplace, the lead game developer wanted to create a light-hearted game about leading a balanced lifestyle.
There are no hard themes villainizing candy, but through exploration, players can discover at least one underlying cause of overconsumption: fear. With super fruits, called Titans, locked away, players can plumb the body’s depths to free them and gain their extraordinary powers to help fight off the candy hoards. And, for fun, you can play solo or with a friend! Accountabilibuddies can make a big difference!
Calorie Defenders is aiming for a Q4 2021 release on PC and Nintendo Switch. Wishlist the game on Steam to stay updated.
Onirike
If you’ve ever wanted a Tim Burton video game, look no further than Onirike from DevilishGames. With its distinct stop-motion, claymation style, players will explore an open world and non-linear narrative tucked inside a single day cycle.
Gather a particular flower, gypsophila, and plant the seeds to create new paths as you hide from evil forces. The main character, Prieto, is unaware of himself, his nature, and his origin. Find his memories in this dark place using his unique ability to disappear. Stealth and exploration will be your clearest path to victory.
Onirike is scheduled for a Q1 2021 release from DevilishGames and BadLand Publishing. Wishlist it on Steam to stay updated.
Where is Eleanor Rose?
From Team KDG, Where is Eleanor Rose? is an adventure game/visual novel hybrid for a look into the turbulent emotions felt during times of loss and struggle. Help Georgia find her lost classmates who are overwhelmed with stress relating to loneliness, hurt, and more as you try to find Eleanor Rose. Eleanor came into Georgia’s life in a time of crisis, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.
As Georgia frees the other students, she will have to face her trauma in long-suppressed memories. Play this surreal and cinematic game for free on Itch.io.
Neurodeck
Tavrox Games started work on Neurodeck in 2019 with the goals of providing insight into various hidden conditions and mental disabilities and creating a more empathetic society through play.
Neurodeck is inspired by deck building mechanics found in games such as Hearthstone and Monster Train, but instead of a purely fantastic world, this game looks inward, presenting psychological traits, disabilities, conditions, and outcomes. Explore common phobias like arachnophobia and agoraphobia.
Players can expect to gain entry into this new style of deck builder in 2021 on PC and Nintendo Switch. Wishlist Neurodeck on Steam to stay updated.
